Program inquiry question:
What features have stayed the same and changed in my community?
In this stimulating full day incursion, students investigate images, video and the school surroundings to find evidence of change that has occurred to a specific aspect of their local environment. The day is tailored to the unique situation of your suburb in order that the students can access content in a way that is meaningful to them.
We begin the day by exploring the area's local history and looking at the way in which it has changed since the time before European settlement. Students are introduced to the concepts of continuity and change and consider the effects of this change on their local area.
Video and images are examined to look at ways in which the city and their local area have stayed the same or changed over time, before we head out to look for specific examples of change in the area around school (e.g. housing, roads). iPads are used to take photos of these for use in their later multi modal presentation.
Students then participate in a highly scaffolded writing activity using cards coloured according to word groups, which are physically manipulated to create comparative complex sentences. Once students are confident with the structure of this, they write a script independently using the cards as their word bank.
The day concludes with students working in pairs to produce a digital presentation of their script. These are provided to teachers for later celebration of the day and to inform assessment of the unit.
