As part of the City Cluster's GEMs program, Brisbane Urban Environmental Education Centre offer a program for nominated Year 4 students with a strong proven interest in the curriculum area of Science.

In three exciting and in-depth sessions (two half days and one full day), students will come to understand why polymers are so important in our everyday lives. Synthetic and natural polymers will be investigated and the structures of these in some familiar objects will be observed in quite unique and eye-opening ways. Models of polymers will be constructed to further illustrate how the types of bonds better suit them to their purpose.

On the full day visit, students will delve into polymers a little deeper in some engaging hands-on activities which will demonstrate the need for scientific rigour in experiments. By the end of these sessions, our young scientists will be able to define what a polymer is, explain why they are important in our lives and know the importance of rigorous scientific testing when investigating a problem.
