Program overview
Schoolyard Explorers is a two-hour incursion designed to immerse students in the sensory investigations of living things, through exploring the natural and built environments in school. Together, we will determine the basic needs of the survival of animals and plants through a series of observations.
The day begins with a sensory bag activity to help the students' switch on their senses and get ready to become schoolyard explorers. Before our exploration of two sites in school, students predict the living things they might find in each.
We then move into the school grounds and embark on a sensory walk. The students use magic eyes and collect samples of insects and complete a habitat survey. We compare the two sites by tallying the variety of living things found at each before considering which is providing for the basic needs of things found there. Students sketch an insect collected on their walk to consider why the organism was found there and discussing the basic needs for its survival. Collectively, we consider the human impact on familiar environments and devise ways in which we can look after these.
The program concludes with the class collaboratively creating a classroom collage of their sensory walk and discussing the human impact on living things.
