Program overview

My Place, Your Place, Our Place is a two-hour incursion, which delves deeper into the significance of natural, built and managed environments to foster the students' sense of place and stewardship.

In an introductory activity, visual literacy is used to interpret the cause and effect of changes on natural environments over time in the shared reading of a well-loved book. The concepts of managed, constructed and natural environments in schools are further explored in a sorting activity, where students have the opportunity to demonstrate their understanding.

As a group, the students explore the school grounds, taking photos of managed, natural and constructed environments and identifying areas within their environment that require care. The concept of stewardship is introduced, and we discover how personal connections can create meaning and transform unappreciated spaces into our much loved places.

Next, the students use the photos taken on the day to complete a highly scaffolded perspective sketch of an area in which all three environments are represented. By the end of the program, the students are well positioned to begin considering how they can better protect their special places.
